Fishing from croca ski’s
These ‘fishing kayaks’ have become very popular
amongst anglers in South Africa due to their lightweight
construction, superb stability and easy manoeuvrability.
Large fish including billfish have been taken from these
craft over the years and much can be said about its lack
of noise and minimal silhouette, which from a fishing
point of view stands for a lot.
Guided and self – guided excursions both in the
estuary as well as offshore are available. This craft
is also suitable for those just wanting to explore the
mangrove system.
-
Ocean Safaris
This fun ride to sea gives one the opportunity of seeking
out the elusive and rare dugong. You also stand a good
chance of seeing whales and whale sharks as well as the
resident pods of dolphins.
-
Quad bikes
One of our most popular activities, a guided quad bike
trail through the coconut plantations and local villages
adds a new dimension to Mozambique. One is able to get
into areas that one would normally never see.
Our quad bikes are very user friendly. If one has never
used one before it will take just a short time to become
proficient.
The ability to travel into off beat areas allows one to
experience the real Mozambique.
Quad bikes are not allowed on the beaches. We wish to
preserve our rich marine life there.
-
-
Mangrove
Adjacent to the lodge is a salt-water mangrove with crystal
clear waters; here one can explore by boat or foot. This
ecosystem is made up of a fascinating chain of pioneering
and sacrificial plants together with a huge array of crustaceans.
Flocks of flamingos, the local fish traps and stunning
sunsets over the estuary makes this a photographer’s
dream.

Dress:
Being in the tropics it rarely gets cold. Dress is casual
at all times. A tracksuit or a jersey is recommended in case
of occasional cool evenings. Sun hat, cap and sun protection
lotion are recommended.
Climate:
Mozambique has a tropical climate, warm to hot and sunny almost
all year round. The cooler winter months of June, July and
August are very pleasant and generally only in the evenings
would you require a light jacket. The Barra Peninsula is a
low rainfall area with an average 800ml of rain falling annually.
Rains are tropical so tend to be short sharp downpours. Sea
temperatures vary between 20 and 29 degrees allowing for comfortable
swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving all year round.

Health:
All of Mozambique is a malarial area and it is advisable to
check with your pharmacy or doctor as to the current recommended
prophylaxis to take. There is a hospital in the town of Inhambane,
however you are advised to take out medical insurance and
ensure it covers medical air evacuation in case of an emergency
which could not be dealt with locally.
Currency & Credit Cards:
The local currency is the Meticais and is decimal based .Flamingo
Bay accepts Visa and Mastercard. It should however be noted
that many other facilities and shops in Inhambane do not accept
credit cards and have a strictly cash only policy. They normally
accept Meticais, Rand, US dollars, British pounds and Euro.
Banks:
Inhambane has two banks, namely BIM and Bank Austral. Here
one may change money into local currency.
Bank Astral has a cash withdrawal machine, however it does
not always work so cannot be depended on. It is always advisable
to travel with some physical cash in Mozambique. The Lodges
are unable to exchange cash for credit cards.
Fuel:
Most self drive travellers fill up in Maputo, Xai-Xai, Maxixe
and Inhambane. No fuel is available for sale at the Lodge.Unleaded
fuel is available in Maputo, Xai-Xai and Maxixe. Many service
stations do not provide air for tyres. Air is readily available
in all small towns and you will pay a nominal amount per tyre
to fill. Ask any local for air (ar – in Portuguese)
and he will point you to some enterprising fellow who has
a small generator and compressor at the side of the road.
